Why is image deemed more professional then practicality and ability to do the job?

Ie why would trainers if neat, combats/ a fleece if cold or light loost top in summer, possibly a gortex jacket and backpack be considered inappropaite and unprofessional.

When sports shoes are more practical and confortable in terms of support, grip on floor and help people move faster

Cargo trousers have many pockets loose quick dry and comfy.

Backpacks are easier to carry heavier loads and less likly to be left behind

etc

Why is image deemed more professional then practicality and ability to do the job?
Because an important component of any job is the ability to interact with others, and this ability depends on the image you create.
Reply:When you first get a job, you are judged more by appearance because there is nothing else to judge you on. If you are good at the job and they grow to depend on you, that will lessen over time.
Reply:It's all about perception. How you present yourself is deemed a representation of how you'll perform your job. If you show up for work in casual attire, you give off an image of not caring about your job or how people perceive you. However, if you show up dressed professionally, it shows you're serious about your job, and will make you stand out to your employers - for the right reasons. There's an old saying that goes "dress for the job you want, not the job you have". In other words, if you want to be promoted, you'll show it in your appearance.

If you want a job where you can dress like you're going to hang out with your friends, it sounds like you should be looking for something else. But be warned - there aren't too many jobs like that which pay well.
Reply:I think this question is a double edged sword. Business dress is suppose to go hand in hand with professionalism However this is not always the case. You have made some judgemental statements yourself about people in suits....It is standard practise as to what is worn in an office environment there is no changing that. I could say the same as to people that I have met with fantastic quals from university that appeared to have no common sense at all.....
