Sprained ankle?

I'm prone to ankle sprains and I have recently sprained my ankle again. I went to the doctor and he told me that it is quite a mild sprain and it would heal within 2 weeks. But it has been 3 wees plus now and it is still swollen and it is slightly painful at times. It is not swollen in the morning when I wake up but it swells when I come home from school even though I did not walk much having taken a cab home everyday. And I wear an ankle guard and sometimes an ankle brace with it too. Also, the front part of my foot(ball of my foot) hurt when I walk after some time even though it is just for a short distance. Why is this so? I wear good and comfortable sports shoe and also I did not have such a problem when I sprained my ankle in the past.

Sprained ankle?
I wouldn't wear the ankle braces all the time. It only teaches your ankle to depend on them and weaken from it. the braces are ok initially to help them heal the tissues but not forever. Do youelevate your legs at all? Even during the day, you should stop everynow n then to give it a rest by elevation. If you apply ice packs...15 minutes on and then you can go for a while. (helps with swelling) The ball of my foot hurts occassionally too...I cant help there.

Ahh you go to school..no time to elevate :P And that is what you need. Ask a teacher if there is somewhere where you can sit and prop your foot up on an empty desk seat. Show them your ankle and speak of your problems. the constant bent knee while sitting is forcing fluids to stay down there and helping the sweeling out :P Good Luck Deary!

P.S Once you are better..Start with some therapy. Do ankle rolls inward then outward. Then point and flex your feet. (start with 5 each and build from there in time) You need to strengthen your ankles for the future to lessen sprains.
Reply:Definitely strengthen the muscles in your ankle. A poorly rehabbed sprain will make you more prone to sprains in the future. Start off by moving through the range of motion with your foot off the floor, as your weight bearing will tolerate progress to moving through the range of motion while supporting some weight on the foot. I agree that you should stop using ankle braces all the time, wearing them all the time only weakens the support muscles.
