I'm planning on a backpacking trip to europe in january, to a few countries like Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. I know of cold weather because I live in russia (where weather gets as low as -25). But as much as I like to pack sweaters and thermal clothings, I am actually trying my best to travel light. Do you think I could travel around in Switzerland with sport shoes (with thick woolen socks to stay warm)?
What do I wear in europe in winter (mid jan to mid feb)?
youll need plenty of warm clothing, i live in germany and you should try the onion method (thats how we call it). wear many (thin and thick) layers of clothes, so if it gets warmer or colder during the day, you can adjust quick! but seriously, you better come in the summertime - its really nice all over europe then ;)
better dont wear sport shoes - youll get wet feet easily!
Reply:AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.
Wear some tights or themal underwear under jeans and tops. If you're travelling you'll be out and about all day so keep warm with tight layers. always take gloves and scarf and a beanie. 70 per cent of bodyhead escapes from your head so a thick beanie.
Wind proof jacket. You won't look very attractive but you really wont care.
Reply:No, sport shoes won't be enough if it snows. Pack a pair of boots.
Reply:A good Rain Slicker, like a crew on a boat wears, some Wellingtons, high boots that are water proof. Leather outer jacket, Wool Sweater, flannel shirts. Jeans. Chucka Boots, those are like Hikeing Boots. allways 4 pairs of socks. when one gets wet, put a dry pair on and lash the wet ones to your pack so they can dry.
A Vynal Pauncho never hurts, and makes a fast tent if and when a rain comes.
Trick to any Extreme Condition Survival and comfort is allow the sweat to escape and remain dry at the same time.
Reply:you are used to cold weather. I get cold when i am traveling cuz i am out and about so much, but you are used to the weather. the sport shoes and woolen socks will work. take lots of layers cuz it will be different whereever you go. enjoy...i did that trip for 6 weeks one time many years ago at that time of year and FROZE in the northern countries. be smart and take enough for about 4 layers.
